Severe Depression Symptoms

Jun 13 2011

Severe depression symptoms are sometimes hard to see, this possibly because people who are suffering with severe depression symptoms often withdraw themselves from friends and family.

Depression and Major Depression is a very serious medical condition.  It is not ok to simply say to someone, snap out of it. People who are suffering from this debilitating disease would probably love nothing more than to wake up one morning and have everything seem better and not be depressed any more.  Often people suffering with depression feel isolated and have a sense of hopelessness and helplessness. It can become all consuming and people who are suffering may want to just stay home and away from crowds and in a lot of cases they will withdraw socially and that may even include close family members.  Depression and Major depression are a serious illness and people who are suffering will often need the support of loved ones, medical practitioners and councilors’ to help improve their situation.

Some people may misunderstand people suffering from depression, they may think that the person has become rude because they no longer go out or make contact with them, they may think that the person who is suffering from depression have stopped being their friend because they cannot concentrate on anything you are saying.  This is not the case, it is because a person who has depression can’t communicate and may feel overwhelmed with everything and everyone around them.

While it is sometimes possible for people with depression to recovery very quickly without the need for medication it is not always the case and people who do have severe depression symptoms should immediately seek medical attention and help. In fact it is wise for anyone who is suffering from any form of depression be it mild or severe to seek medical help.  There are so many well trained people out there who are ready and willing to help you.  It is important to feel comfortable with your doctor or councilor, so if the first person you find to talk to is not really someone you feel you get with, you should keep trying and find someone who is more to your liking.

Everyone feels sad at some time or another and this does not necessarily mean that you are suffering from depression, everyone has ups and down and it is perfectly normal to feel sad for any number of different reasons. It is if you continue to feel sad for no reason for a period of time and the emptiness will not go away, or if you have very strong feelings of sadness for no particular reason you may have the symptoms’ for a depressive illness, either way you can and should seek help.

Sometime people who are suffering from this disease do not actually know they are, all they know is that they feel sad and perhaps lonely and misunderstood but do not really know why. Maybe they do not even feel sad, perhaps they just feel like they are completely alone and lifeless, they will often face feelings of nothingness, nothing really makes them feel happy or excited they may feel apathetic towards life and everything it entails.

Poor sleeping, lack of concentration, feeling sad constantly and maybe for no particular reason, gaining or losing weight are all signs of severe depression symptoms. Although these are some of the signs they are not all of them, and there is no reason why some people get different symptoms to other people. Maybe this is because everyone is different the symptoms and variations would be very different as well.  Some other symptoms include feeling like a failure, feeling like everything is your fault and maybe even turning to alcohol and drugs to help make you feel better.  Other people may feel tired all the time and feel like it’s too hard to cope with the housework and other simple chores, they can also feel frustrated and feel like everything is getting on top of them.  These can be some of the warning signs that you or someone you know are suffering from a depressive illness.

If you or someone you know has any or all of these symptoms you should try and immediately seek medical help. There is no shame in admitting how you feel and although you may feel like it’s embarrassing, it is not. There are so many people who feel just like this.  If you know someone who has any of these symptons, you should talk with them, let them know that no matter what they say you will not judge them.  You should never encourage them to just ignore it and it will go away. The best thing you can do for someone who is suffering from any form of depression is encourage them to seek professional help.

Severe Depression Symptoms in Women

Nov 28 2011

It is a sad fact that women are a lot more likely to suffer from depression then men.  Sometimes severe depression symptoms in women can be easily recognized to an outside person; however severe depression symptoms in women are often not noticed by the women who are themselves suffering from it. If you are suffering from depression or you know someone who is, you will probably be able to notice it but it is important to remember that depression is more than just the feeling of being a little bit sad or even a lot sad, depression is an overwhelming feeling of sadness. You will probably find that the person who is suffering from depression will more than likely feel a bit isolated and feel like they have lost interest in do the things that they like and normally do. Depression can be very isolating and people often feel that they are perhaps weak and useless because they cannot seem to shake the overwhelming sadness and depressed feelings.

Other severe depression symptoms in women can include but are not limited to a feeling of nothingness or an “empty” mood, they will most likely include the feeling that they do not really enjoy or gain any pleasure in things like sex or other activities that they used to really enjoy. The feeling of restlessness or uneasy may be very prominent and it may very well be coupled with irritability and a lot of crying. A lot of the time severe depression symptoms in women will make a woman feel very guilty about things in the past or things they think they could have or should have done better. They will often feel very worthless coupled with the extreme feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.

Women may feel very tired all the time but will have trouble getting to sleep or if they can fall asleep they may find that their sleep is often disrupted and they tend to wake up very early in the morning, or they can do the complete opposite and sleep way too much. Women are often very concerned about their weight but women who are suffering from depression will have a change in their appetite which will make them either put on a lot of weight because they are overeating to make themselves feel better or they may very well be not able to eat a lot and will lose an excessive amount of weight. You may find it extremely hard to concentrate on anything or anyone, that includes when your children come home from school and really want to talk to you about things, although you may be physically present and they are talking you be hearing what they are saying but you cannot really listen or concentrate on what they are saying.  It may also be very hard to make decisions on little things as well as the big important decisions.

There may even be some physical symptoms to your major depression as well.  These can include constant headaches that do not respond to medications, it can be that you have a lot of internal gastro problems with digesting food and stomach cramps you could even be suffering from chronic pain for no reason.

Severe depression symptoms in women can also give you thoughts of committing suicide or even attempting suicide constant thoughts of death or even any thoughts of death can mean a really serious thing and it is extremely important that you get help and you do so immediately.

It is sad that there are more cases of severe depression symptoms in women than there are in men however it is the case as women get older. Before girls become teenagers depression is probably about the same in both sexes, however when girls do end up going through puberty in their teens, more girls will become depressed than boys. In fact it is probably the case that girls will twice as likely to get depression than it is for a boy. A lot of the experts agree that it is probably due to the hormones in a girl’s body.  Women go through so many different changes as they grow older and their hormone levels can go up and down with different changes that they go through. There are things like getting their first period or menstrual cycle and then when they become pregnant. There are so many more changes that a women’s body will go through in one life time that may lead to an increase in severe depression symptoms in women.

Whatever the reason is that women will be more likely to suffer than men, does not mean its ok and that you should expect it because you are a woman or that you feel you need to just tolerate it. If you do have any depression symptoms you really should seek medical help immediately.
